ISSUES
We are a grassroots organization. As a grassroots organization we work with congregations representing 48,000 families. With a group this large, we do not and could not determine for them what issues should matter to them. Instead, we build relationships and we listen. We learn. We identify leaders and help to maximize their potential as reformers. And we provide support for organizing research meetings and community actions around communal interests.
Through this process we have had tremendous success, not because we push our own agenda, but because we find creative ways to put a microphone to the mouth of community members and let them speak—and be heard.
Last year, we helped to bring residents and public officials together at Get Out the Vote forums in Santa Ana, Costa Mesa, and Garden Grove. We collaborated with local leaders and other civic groups to voice concerns over responsible development of the Platinum Triangle in Anaheim. We won policy change around code inspections, cracking down on slum landlords in Fullerton. Youth organized for safer streets and for Spanish-language services at the Costa Mesa Police Department.
