All kids count | Reduce violence When we educate our kids, they are far more likely to succeed in life. And our communities are better and safer for it. We have found that there is a strong correlation between kids dropping out of school and gang violence. Youth high-school dropouts are three-and-one-half times more likely to be involved in gang activity than high school graduates, and eight times more likely to serve a criminal sentence. The math is simple: Investing in kids equals less violence… and better tomorrows for our communities. One of the most important tools for breaking the cycle of violence is education. Investing in education means supporting local schools and programs that benefit students. It also means investing in youth who desire technical, job skills training. Locally, our community and congregation leaders held a school board candidate forum during our Get Out the Vote campaign. This forum provided an opportunity for families to ask questions and engage with school representatives. As well, our community leaders facilitated a meet-and-greet between the principal of High School Inc. in Santa Ana and 50 concerned parents and students. There is a tenuous link between our kids and thriving, safe communities. We hope to strengthen that link. For more information on education, contact eddie@occcopico.org.
