Make equitable investments | Create jobs During an economic crisis, the families hit hardest are low-income. Discouraged, jobless, desperate—this describes the state of many who have been adversely affected by this economic downturn, the worst in United States post-war history. The time is NOW for advocacy and community organizing groups to ensure that the voices of low-income families are heard. And not only heard, but acted upon. With local and state funds frozen, the federal government alone is able to create new jobs and stimulate our stagnant economy. We must act to ensure that key federal stimulus money is invested so as to benefit the most vulnerable in our county and cities. More than that, we need investments in job creation for the bottom 15% of low-income workers who need – and will immediately spend – stimulus money [link to PICO document]. We are leading a conversation in Orange County with our leaders around the stimulus funds. This conversation focuses on action steps we must take in order to ensure that the stimulus package is used in a wise, equitable way. For more information on the economy, contact kerry@occcopico.org.
