Grassroots leadership | Put your faith in action Fundamental to the health of communities is an active, informed and engaged citizenry. Furthermore, we believe that one’s faith should be a primary motivator for civic participation. Putting our faith in action reaps generous gifts that serve to deepen our trust in God. These gifts are called by many names. Empowerment, responsibility, leadership and social capital are but a few. More than anything else, putting our faith in action means achieving justice for all families in Orange County, not just the well connected and wealthy. With this in mind, civic participation requires collective action. It requires asking hard questions and demanding straight answers. It means that we cannot sit back and let our communal identity to be shaped by outside forces. We must act together, and by so doing make our voice heard. To this end, we have focused our efforts on educating members of communities we work in about issues that affect them. In 2008, during the election season, our leaders hosted five public forums in three different cities with mayoral, council and school board candidates. Our Get Out the Vote campaign was successful in bringing low-income voters and candidates face-to-face. GOTV facilitated a context where the values and interests of low-income families took precedence in the election. For more information on civic participation, contact: kerry@occcopico.org.
